Clinton Journal | Sheriff’s office investigating dog found dead in suitcase
CLINTON — The DeWitt County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the discovery of a dead dog placed inside a suitcase. The dog was discovered in the case on July 1.
“A citizen called on July 1 to locate a suitcase on the side of the road on Green Valley Road, just north of Ten Mile Creek,” DeWitt County Sheriff Mike Walker told the Clinton Journal on Thursday. .
Walker said the citizen reported that the case was covered in flies “and had a really bad smell.
Walker said deputies attended the scene, opened the case and found the dog.
“We got animal control involved and had it put (the dog) in their freezer to keep the evidence,” Walker said. “We will have the animal performed additional treatment tomorrow.”
County detectives spent time answering phone calls and conducting interviews. Walker said they conducted at least 20 interviews in relation to the case.
“Well over 20 interviews, probably closer to 40,” Walker said. “We are trying to gather enough evidence to move forward.”
Walker said his office did not release specific information about the case to prevent a suspect from destroying evidence. He addressed a particular Facebook page where some people have posted in the last 24 hours directly accusing a person by name.
“It gives the impression that just because they didn’t know, we weren’t doing anything,” Walker said. “Fortunately, we had two weeks without any social media presence to be able to carry out an investigation without innuendo or accusations.”
Walker said his office is doing everything it can “to get justice for this dog.”
