DRUCC discusses passenger complaints about physical check of bags by railway police in meeting
Passenger associations have complained that the railway police physically check the luggage of long-distance passengers and also open them, despite the ongoing Covid scenario. This was discussed at a meeting of the Divisional Railroad Users Advisory Committee (DRUCC) – the first physical meeting in the past two years in these times of COVID-19 – which took place on December 30 at the office. Central Western Railway in Mumbai.
This meeting lasted an hour and a half which began around 11 am when members of the DRUCC discussed the problems faced by rail travelers at stations and inside local trains. According to the DRUCC members, they discussed several issues; one of the most important being that of railroad travelers complaining that railroad cops physically inspect their luggage.
“Passengers have complained that these railroad cops ask them to open the luggage and search it. We have received complaints that these cops are even asking for money for some reason. At a time when Covid is still around and baggage screening machines are available, then what is the need to manually open the bags, ”said DRUCC member R Singhal.
These complaints come in particular from Borivali, Bhayander and Bandra Terminus where long-distance trains arrive. Railway officials claim they too took this complaint seriously. Sources said ideally all baggage screening should be done in front of cameras. The railway authorities install more than 4,500 video surveillance systems in station premises, including entry / exit points of stations.
“We discussed various issues raised by members. We will certainly act on the solution as well, ”a WR official said on condition of anonymity.
Chances are that a special helpline will also be created and stuck at entry / exit points of stations that passengers can complain about in the event that they are illegally asked for money or fines are imposed. or manually scanned baggage without real justification.
