GST Board Postpones Decision on Levying 28% Tax on Casinos, Online Gambling, Horse Racing and Lotteries | –
Chandīgarh: The GST Board postponed its decision on levying a 28% tax on casinos, online gambling, horse racing and lottery on Wednesday pending further consultations with stakeholders, the minister said of Finance of the Union, Nirmala Sitharaman.
A group of ministers led by Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad Sangma, has been asked to re-examine stakeholder submissions on the review mechanism and submit their report by July 15, he said. she told reporters here.
The council will meet again the first week of August to decide on the matter, she said.
A two-day panel meeting considered a GoM report but postponed a decision as Goa and a few others wanted to make more submissions.
The GoM had recommended that online games be taxed at the full value of the consideration, including the contest entry fee paid by the player when participating in the game.
In the case of racetracks, he had suggested that the GST be levied on the total value of the bets grouped together in the totalizers and placed with the bookmakers.
It also recommended that no distinction be made on the basis of games of skill or chance for GST purposes and that they be taxed at the higher rate of 28 per cent.
